Philly's Finest!
In 2001 Hope Afloat USA, a breast cancer survivor dragon boat team, was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The team paddles on the Schuylkill River in the heart of the city’s beautiful Fairmount Park. Women from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware have discovered a passion they never knew existed by joining up. The team has participated in a large amount of festivals over the years traveling to the Canadian cities of Montreal, Vancouver, Welland, Windsor, Belleville, and Peterborough; overseas to Caloundra Australia and Rome Italy; and here in the US to New York NY, Princeton NJ, Cape May NJ, Washington DC, Baltimore MD, Wilmington DE, Tampa FL, Orlando FL, Sarasota FL, Burlington VT and hometown Philadelphia. Many medals have been won starting with the gold in the Liberty Race in New York City. Hope Afloat has provided opportunities to share new goals, new experiences and enrich the lives of women who have had breast cancer. They have built a community that is continually strengthened by the ties of deep friendship, meaningful purpose, and a passion for the sport of dragonboating. They laugh together, cry together, and work hard together, always supporting each other on and off the water through all aspects of their lives. They are dedicated to changing the image of survivors by showing they lead full and active lives after breast cancer. They believe this healthy positive adventure can help to fight the disease. Impossible goals have been achieved and un-envisioned places reached all because they paddle with this amazing group of women. Every breast cancer survivor should join Hope Afloat to receive the gifts of friendship, fitness, and FUN!!!!!
